Abstract

The meaning and structure of an abstract written in English should correspond to a Russian-language abstract; however, the content can be more detailed. Active rather than passive voice should be used. In order to avoid distortion of the basic concepts it is desirable to use the corresponding English terms. This is particularly important for titles of specific diseases, syndromes, or specific methods mentioned by the authors.

Key words

To select key words the thesaurus of the US National Library of Medicine - Medical Subject Headings (MeSH) should be used.

Author information

Specify the full name, degree, title, position, place of work, city, and country. The name should be written in accordance with an international passport or it must be written as in previously published articles in international journals. The authors who are published for the first time and do not have an international passport, should use BGN / PCGN standard transliteration.

Example

Schastny Evgeny D., DM, Professor, Head of Affective States Department, Mental Health Research Institute, Tomsk, Russian Federation.

Main body

Original papers should be structured as follows: a) introduction; b) materials and methods; c) results; g) discussion; d) conclusion.

Introduction

The section proves the scientific relevance of the research and includes the purpose of the study.

Materials and Methods

The section provides the insight into research design. If a process of randomization was used, it should be explained how it was conducted to form groups. If a "blind" control was used, authors should describe the methods they applied. The authors should report the number of cases when the examination was discontinued (e.g, the number of patients who dropped out of the clinical trial), and their reason.

It is necessary to avoid the use of statistical terms, such as "randomized", "significant", "correlations" and "sample" to refer to non-statistical concepts. If the research design of a manuscript does not correspond to its purpose and objectives, the manuscript may be rejected by the editors.

It is necessary to specify which computer programs were used during the work, which statistical methods were applied to justify the results.

The manuscripts of the articles with a sufficient amount of experimental information but with no statistical analysis, or the articles where statistical methods were used or described in a wrong way, may be rejected by the editors. In some cases, when the amount of information does not allow to include statistical analysis, but actual results have a significant novelty in the field of research, the article can be accepted for publication.

If possible, the data should be presented in a quantitative form with appropriate indicators of measurement variability (confidence intervals, interquartile range, etc.).

Particular attention should be paid to the correct representation of the nominal and rank indicators that are recommended to represent as frequency distribution.

It is necessary to give definition to all statistical terms, acronyms and symbolic notations used in the article. For example, M - sample mean; t - average error; σ - standard square deviation; p - achieved level of significance, etc. If M ± m expression is used, then the size of the sample n should be indicated. If statistical criteria used in the article are limited in their use, it is necessary to specify how these restrictions were tested and what are the results of the test. When using parametric criteria authors should describe how they tested the law of distribution (e.g., normal) and the results of this test.

The accuracy of the results received after calculation of indicators must comply with the accuracy of measurement methods. Mean values should not result in more accurate than one decimal compared with the original data. It is recommended to round off the results (averages and variability) to the same number of decimal places, as the different number can be interpreted as different accuracy of measurement.

According to current rules, it is recommended to use the term "statistical significance level of differences" instead of the term "significance of differences".  In each case, it is recommended to indicate the actual value of the achieved level of p-value for the statistical criterion. If the index can be calculated in different ways, and they are described in the paper, it is necessary to specify which method of calculation was used (for example, Pearson correlation coefficient, Spearman correlation coefficient, bi-serial etc.).

Results

The section comprises the results of the study logically presented in the form of text, tables or figures (graphs, charts). It is necessary to avoid repetition of the data in the text and tables or figures; only important observations can be emphasized or summarized. If not all patients undergo the examination of studied symptoms, the table should have the number of observations for each symptom. As an alternative to tables with large numbers, graphics can be used. The graphs and diagrams should include confidential interval or square deviation. The graphs should also have inscriptions and axis marks, indicated measurement units.

Percentages must be presented in the text or the table together with the absolute value of that number which is taken as 100%, for example, 25% out of 120 patients. Another way is to report both percentages and absolute values, for example: 25% (30/120) and 30 (25%) out of 120 patients.

If a subsequent recalculation of a percentage is performed, it is necessary to describe this procedure and present the number of objects of research taken as 100%. The required accuracy of percent values depends on the sample size:

- So-called small-size samples (less than 20 objects of research) are not usually converted to percentage. In these cases, absolute frequency for the values of that of this symptom should be specified;

- If the sample size is 20 to 100 objects of research, the percentages are converted to integers;

- If the sample size is more than 100 objects of research, the percentage is indicated with no more than one decimal number.

Discussion

New and important aspects of the results of the study should be emphasized in the section. Moreover, the analysis of possible mechanisms or interpretations of data should be presented in the paper, and if possible it is important to compare them with those of other researchers. The authors should not repeat the information already provided in the Introduction, and details from the Results. The Discussion section can include reasonable recommendations for clinical practice and the possible use of the results in the upcoming trials.

When studying the effectiveness of medical interventions the criterion of efficiency should be indicated. When investigating the diagnostic tests it is necessary to specify sensibility indices and specificity indices of diagnostic methods as compared to the standard measure. In review articles it is recommended to describe methods and the inclusion criteria for materials included in the paper.

Conclusion

This section includes solutions to the problem stated in the title (or objective) of the article. It is not recommended to refer to an article in progress. Conclusions must be validated by the results of statistical analysis. They should not be of declarative character underpinned by the general biological and medical principles.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

Conflict of interest and authors’ contributions

All authors must disclose any financial and personal relationships with other people or organizations that could inappropriately influence (bias) their work. Examples of potential conflicts of interest include employment, consultancies, stock ownership, honoraria, paid expert testimony, patent applications/registrations, and grants or other funding. If there are no conflicts of interest then please state the following: “Authors announce the absence of obvious and potential conflicts connected with publishing”.

If there are four or more authors, then each is required to declare his or her individual contribution to the article. All authors should have made substantial contributions to all of the following: (1) the conception and design of the study, (2) analysis and interpretation of data, (3) drafting the article or revising it critically for important intellectual content, (4) final approval of the version to be submitted.

Source of financing

Authors are requested to identify who provided financial support for the research and/or preparation of the article. It is not required to specify the amount of funding. If there is no source of financing then please state the following: “Authors announce the absence of financing”

Compliance with the ethical principles

Research projects involving human subjects must conform to ethical standards of the Declaration of Helsinki, 2000 version ("Ethical Principles for Medical Research Involving Human Subjects") developed by the World Medical Association, and to "Rules of Clinical Practice in the Russian Federation" approved by Order of the Ministry of Health of the Russian Federation dated 19.06.2003, # 266. All people involved in the investigation, must give informed consent to participate in the study.

Research projects that require the use of experimental animals should be carried out in compliance with the principles of humanity, set out in the directives of the European Community (86/609 / EEC) and the Declaration of Helsinki.

In both cases, authors should specify whether the examination record has been approved by the ethics committee (including the name of the organization, its location, the record number and the date of the committee meeting).

Acknowledgement

This section should acknowledge any research assistants or others who provided help during the research but who are not included among the authors.

References in the ARTICLE

The journal uses Vancouver style of referencing: references are listed in the order in which they are cited in text (independently of the language), but not in alphabetical order. Citing a source (GOST (All-Union State Standard) R 7.0.5-2008 "Bibliographic reference. General requirements and rules") authors should enclose numbers in square brackets in accordance with the reference list, in which the authors are listed in order of citation.

Bibliographic information should be up-to-date, authoritative and comprehensive. References should be given to primary sources only. The authors should verify references with original documents.

Every scientific fact must be accompanied by a separate reference to the source. If one sentence mentions several scientific facts, after each of them a reference is made (not at the end of the sentence). If there are multiple references, they are given in chronological order [5-9]. It is necessary to make sure that all references given in the text are present in the list of references (and vice versa).

It is not recommended to include the dissertations, unpublished articles, extended abstracts of dissertations. It is better to make references to the articles based on thesis research.

It is important to avoid references to the abstracts and articles taken form the collections of papers and conference proceedings as foreign databases require their titles be translated into English. Articles that are not yet published but accepted for publication are described as “to appear”, and cited with written consent of an author and a publisher.

Self-citation is forbidden, except for cases when it is necessary (in the review of the literature no more than 3-5 references).

Documents (orders, GOSTs, medical and sanitary rules, methodological instructions, regulations, sanitary and epidemiological rules, standards, federal laws) should be indicated in parentheses in the text.

LIST OF REFERENCES

List of references is placed at the end of the manuscript under the heading “References” and includes the bibliographic description of all works that are cited in the text.

The bibliographic lists are compiled with regard to Uniform Requirements for Manuscripts Submitted to Biomedical Journals. Correct description of the sources used in the list of references is a guarantee that the cited publication will be taken into account when assessing the scientific activities of its authors and organizations where they work.

Given the requirements of international citation systems, bibliographic lists are included in the English-language part of the article and, should be written not only in the original language, but also using the Roman alphabet (in Latin letters). Therefore, the authors of articles should present English-language sources in Latin, and Russian-language sources using Cyrillic and the Roman alphabet. Authors’ names and Russian-language titles of sources (italicized) should be transliterated. The titles of articles, monographs, collections of articles, conferences with the indication of the source language (in Russ.) after the source data are translated into English. The English name of the journal is given (the name is verified against the official website of the publication) through a dash after the transliteration of the title and is italicized.

How to prepare bibliographic description with the system of automatic transliteration and translation http://www.translit.ru:

  1. Go to translit.ru. website. In the "options" box, select the BGN (Board of Geographic Names) translation system. Insert name of authors, title of the publication in Russian in the special field and click the button "in translit".
  2. Copy the transliterated text into the prepared list.
  3. Translate the title of the book or article into English using the Google Translate, transfer it to the upcoming list. Translation, of course, requires editing, so this part must be prepared by a person who understands English.
  4. Combine transliterated and translated descriptions in accordance with accepted rules.
  5. At the end of the description, it is necessary to indicate (in Russ.) in parentheses.

- So-called small-size samples (less than 20 objects of research) are not usually converted to percentage. In these cases, absolute frequency for the values of that of this symptom should be specified;

- If the sample size is 20 to 100 objects of research, the percentages are converted to integers;

The bibliographical description of each source should include the names of ALL AUTHORS. The list of references should conform to the format recommended by the American National Information Standards Organization (NISO), adopted by the National Library of Medicine (NLM) for databases (Library's MEDLINE / PubMed database) NLM: http: // www. nlm.nih.gov/citingmedicine.

The titles of periodicals can be written in abbreviated form in accordance with the premier bibliographic database MedLine (NLM Catalog). Usually this form is stated by a publishing house; it can be found on the publisher's website or on the list of abbreviations Index Medicus.

If a journal is not indexed in MedLine, it is necessary to specify its full name. Titles of domestic journals should be written in full. It is unacceptable to reduce the title of the article.

DOI

If the cited material has a Digital Object Identifier (DOI), it must be placed at the end of the bibliographic reference.

The authors can check for DOI on the website http://search.crossref.org/ or https: // www. citethisforme.citethisforme.com.

To receive DOI it is necessary to type the name of the article in English in the search box. This website, in addition to the DOI, automatically generates the correct bibliographic description of articles in English. The vast majority of foreign journal articles published after 2000 and many Russian-language articles (published after 2013) are registered in the CrossRef system, and have a unique DOI. The authors are responsible for the authenticity and accuracy of bibliographic data.

TABLES AND FIGURES

Tables and figures should be provided in both Russian and English languages

Tables

Tables should be placed in the text of the article; they should have a numbered title and clearly marked columns convenient and simple to read. These tables must conform to the figures in the text, but they must not copy the information presented in the text. References to tables in the text are obligatory.

For marking the reference * sign is used. If the data from another published or unpublished source is used, its full mane should be given.

Figures

All figures (graphs, photographs) should be numbered. The text should have the reference to the appropriate figure.

Each figure should include a caption in the Russian and English languages. Captions should not have acronyms or abbreviations. Numerical symbols are used for labels inside figures.

If figures have been previously published, it is necessary to specify the original sources and provide a written permission given by the holder of rights for the publication.

The list of captions in the Russian and English languages is placed at the end of the article.

Figures are submitted as separate image files using graphic editors * tif, * jpg, * cdr, * ai with a resolution of at least 300 dpi.

Each file is entitled by the name of the first author and the number of a figure.
